There is a lot of gear and accessories that you can add to your boating days to make them more enjoyable and safer. These things include protective apparel, pet items, travel gear, snorkel gear, swim gear, extreme weather gear, and more. Below we discuss some of the most common boat gear and accessories to enhance your time out on the water!

Extreme Weather Gear

While it is unlikely that you are planning on being on the water during extreme weather, sometimes it comes out of nowhere and surprises us! It is important to be prepared for the worst so you can stay safe in any situation. Some protective gear that you may consider keeping onboard in case of emergency includes boating clothes (rain jackets, windbreakers, etc.), waterproof boots, dry suits, pants, bib overalls, and ponchos. When shopping for this gear it is important to ensure it is designed to help keep you dry. It also may be a smart idea to include different layers in your extreme weather gear to ensure you stay warm and dry no matter what the circumstances are.

Pet Boat Accessories

We all love taking our furry friends out on the water with us, but we need to make sure they are safe and comfortable too! Below is a list of some things you may want to have onboard for your pet.

  • Water bowl and clean drinking water
  • Boat ramp to help your pet onboard and offboard
  • Pet bed or mat to keep them secure while they are onboard and to protect your upholstery
  • Pet boat ladder
  • Pet life jacket
  • Portable pet potty
  • Pet sunscreen (yes, your furry friends need protection from the sun too!)
  • Non-slip waterproof shoes
  • Shade (bimini, sheets, umbrellas, cooling mats, etc.)
  • Leash
  • Spray bottle of water
  • And of course, toys!

Taking our pets on our boating adventures is fun, but we need to make sure they are protected. By ensuring they have everything they need, you can make sure they enjoy the day on the water as much as you enjoy having them with you!

Swim and Snorkel Gear

If you are interested in swimming or snorkeling while you're out on the water, it is important to have the right gear! For snorkeling you will likely need a mask, a snorkel, and a pair of snorkeling fins. You can usually buy these individually or as a set. You want to ensure that your mask and snorkel fit well and are comfortable. Fins come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and the fins you select should be based off of your snorkeling skill level and your strength. You also may want to consider getting a pair of fin socks to prevent chafing and blistering as fins can get uncomfortable.

When it comes to swimming, you don't want to end up with painful bloodshot eyes from opening them underwater. We recommend using a pair of swim goggles or a swim mask, especially for children. Other things that you can keep on hand to make the swimming experience more comfortable are ear plugs, nose clips, and swim caps.

Common Boat Accessories & Travel Gear

If you are planning on traveling on the water, there are some essential items to gather before you leave for your trip! These items will ensure your trip goes as safely and comfortably as possible:

  • VHF Marine Radio
  • Deck/Boat Shoes
  • Personal flotation devices for each passenger that fit correctly (should not be able to pull above the mouth area once secured)
  • Waterproof bags
  • Floating keychain
  • Sunglasses cord
  • Binoculars
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguishers
  • GPS
  • Paper charts and maps incase your GPS malfunctions
  • Waterproof cell phone case
  • Visual signaling devices (flares, strobe lights, flare gun)
  • Sound signaling devices (horn, bell, etc)
  • Anchor
  • Boat cover
  • Onboard battery charger
  • Basic cleaning supplies
  • Emergency repair items
  • A knife

While you may decide you need more or less than this, this is a great starting point for a packing list for your next boating excursion!
