Some states require you to have a boating license and some don't, but either way it is a wise decision to get your boating license if you own a watercraft. Getting your boating license ensures you know all of the boating laws that you need to adhere to, and protects you, your passengers, and others out on the water. This will also make your passengers feel more comfortable, resting assured that you know what you’re doing. In addition to improving security, confidence, and safety, having your boating license can get you insurance discounts on your boat.

Boat Registration VS. Boat License

A boat registration is similar to your car's license plate. It is a requirement of the law that proves that you have properly registered your boat with the state. It also provides a unique identification for your boat.

A boating license is similar to a driver's license, but for boaters. To receive a boating license, you must pass a state-approved boating exam. This will ensure that you have the knowledge necessary in regards to boat safety, navigation, buoys, and more.

What You Need to do to Get Your Boating License

Every state has its own boating license requirements. Some states may have different age restrictions, and some may call the license something different such as a boater safety education certificate. Regardless, there are a few things you should expect to be part of the boating license process no matter which state you call home. Below are the steps you should take to get your boating license:

  • Understand your state's requirements for boat licenses
  • Complete a boater safety course
  • Practice the information you learn in the safety course
  • Take your state's boating license exam

*Be aware that if you move to another state, you'll have to get licensed in the new state and may have different requirements for your new boating license.

Registering Your Boat

Registering your boat is a legal requirement, and a very important step in boat ownership. While different states have different requirements, most require you to display your registration number and/or a validation sticker. The cost of registering your boat varies, usually between a range of $25 - $250. The registration fee goes towards preserving your state's waterways so that you and future generations can enjoy your state's beautiful nature.

You must stay up to date with your boat's registration. It is recommended to start your boat registration renewal process a month to a month and a half before your current registration's expiration date so you can make sure you're covered. You can renew your boat's registration by going through your state's DMV, or you can usually also do it over the phone or online. When it is time to renew your boat's registration you will need to make sure you have the following available:

  • Your current boat registration information
  • Boat's information including registration number and serial number
  • Credit or debit card
  • A printer if you are doing it from home and wish to print a receipt
